Last-Minute Mocap Solutions: A Case Study

Despite months of planning, storyboarding and previs, shot-lists and crew bookings, rush orders and last minute requests are very much a thing in the VFX industry. Perhaps a last minute request from a director, a shot isn't quite panning out as expected or props are misbehaving! Perhaps some extra bodies are required for new scenes...in the mocap world we learn to think fast on our feet and be down to get the job done, whatever it takes!

As much as I love scheduling in work with good lead times, I often receive last minute jobs or tight deadlines. I love to problem solve and brainstorming ideas is a big part of my job - not only when creating bespoke products but also when alternative solutions are needed.

If a quick turnaround is impossible, I'll always try to offer a workaround that meets the client's needs as well as my physical capabilities (unfortunately I do not possess the power to manipulate time).

Overcoming Obstacles to Meet Tight Deadlines

When my repeat client requested a set of mocap hat and gloves for a film shoot, turnaround was very tight. The order was approved late Thursday afternoon for a shoot on the Wednesday following the bank holiday. A next day guaranteed delivery service meant I needed to post this on Monday, and a four day turnaround didn't seem to bad.

But...

Hang on a minute, it's BANK HOLIDAY Monday. No post! Yikes - this meant in order for my client to receive it in time for their shoot on Wednesday morning, they would need to receive it, in their hands by Tuesday *counts backwards on fingers*. This meant sending on...gulp... Saturday morning! OK, not ideal but I got you :)

And so I worked my socks off, running off my sewing machine like Lewis Hamilton on Grand Prix day to produce a worthy set of wearables. The late night paid off and my parcel made it's way to the post office with 15 minutes to spare. Job well done.
